How much does a mural cost in Canada?
Ask a muralist for a price and the first thing they will do is measure the wall. Many Canadian artists work from a rate per square foot, and a typical job lands around $25 to $35.
Do the math on your wall
| Style | Per square foot |
|---|---|
| Simple shapes, flat colour | $20 to $25 |
| Most business and home murals | $25 to $35 |
| Detailed, realistic or tall | $40 to $60 |
Example: an 8 ft by 20 ft wall is 160 square feet. At $30 that is $4,800. Small walls often carry a minimum fee.
What the rate may leave out
Ask what is inside the number. Some artists quote everything; many add these as separate lines:
- Design and revisions: about $750 to $2,500.
- Wall prep, primer and a protective sealer.
- A scissor lift or scaffold, often a few hundred dollars a day.
- Permits, where your city asks for one.
Before you say yes
Ask for one written price that lists what is included, the paint and coating, and who handles the lift and permit. A deposit of 30 to 50% is normal. Measure the wall first, so every artist quotes the same size.
Typical ranges to help you plan, not quotes: every artist sets their own price. Posting a call is free. Seeing who replied: $29; no commission.
