How much does a custom painting cost in Canada?
Many painters price by the square inch, so a 24 x 36 in canvas costs roughly four times what a 12 x 18 does. Here is what that looks like for a wall at home or at the office.
Price by canvas size
| Size (inches) | Typical price |
|---|---|
| 8 x 10 to 12 x 16 | $150 to $600 |
| 16 x 20 to 18 x 24 | $600 to $1,500 |
| 24 x 36 | $1,500 to $3,500 |
| 30 x 40 and larger | $2,500 to $6,000+ |
Oil and fine detail sit at the top of each range; looser acrylic sits near the bottom.
Extras and how payment works
- Deposit: usually 30% to 50% up front, the rest before the painting leaves the studio.
- Revisions: one or two rounds are common, and changes are easiest at the sketch stage.
- Frame: often not included. Budget about $150 to $400.
- Shipping: about $100 to $250 insured, more for large pieces.
Before you commission
Measure the wall first, then ask for the canvas size, the total with frame and shipping, and what is in writing about the deposit and changes. A small sketch or colour study first costs little and avoids surprises.
Typical ranges to help you plan, not quotes: every artist sets their own price. Posting a call is free. Seeing who replied: $29; no commission.
